Running an SEO Campaign for your CBD Business or Marijuana Dispensary
Running an SEO Campaign for your CBD Business or Marijuana Dispensary
Over the last 10 years, there has been a dramatic increase in businesses that have been engaging in selling marijuana based products. This is likely because of the increasing popularity of medical marijuana and cutting edge research that shows benefits of regular consumption of CBD resulting in lax legal parameters.
While it does look like the United States is moving towards becoming a country that tolerates the consumption of legal marijuana – it’s highly important to note that there are extremely significant legal ramifications to operating a marijuana based business and consuming marijuana. Something important to point out is that Google does not allow businesses selling marijuana or marijuana related products to use Google Ads – some social media platforms have restrictions as well.
If you landed on the blog post, I’m sure you’re already familiar with these legal ramifications and are more concerned about how you can actually market your marijuana or cbd dispensary or business online.
While there are many approaches to marketing your business, this blog post focuses on marketing your marijuana dispensary or CBD business through Search Engine Optimization and how you can take action today on attracting new customers to your doorstep.
Why Search Engine Optimization? Let’s look at the data, there is a MASSIVE amount of people searching for marijuana dispensaries near me per month. Just look at this screenshot from SEMRush. If you have thousands of customers yelling in the middle of the street “someone sell me CBD!” – wouldn’t you want your dispensary to be RIGHT THERE?
The potential here is BIG and very real. The advice I give in this article stems directly from my experience ranking all sorts of businesses on Google, namely Marijuana dispensaries and CBD businesses.
First things first – you need a website. Don’t have one check out Shopify or BigCommerce.
Implement the following platforms – I will write content about this in the future explaining the importance of each and how to set each of them up.
Tools to track local SEO performance:
- Google Analytics.
- Google Search Console.
- Google My Business for Marijuana Dispensaries
First things first – if you are a dispensary in a specific locale or if your delivery business is confined to a specific region – Local SEO is going to be extremely important for you. Let’s pause this article for a second, go to Google, and type in “marijuana dispensary near me” – analyze what you see.
You will likely see a map of all of the local marijuana dispensaries. If you click on the actual listing, you will see more details about that specific dispensary – this is actually powered through something called “Google My Business” – funny enough, you can set up your business through Google My Business, but you are significantly limited in its features. While this is important, I will circle back and create more content around this in the future.
Anyway – think about it – when you go to Google for this search – don’t you think this is a great place to have your business? Right in front of the person looking for your products? I’d say so!

Claim and Verify Your GBP Listing: Step-by-step instructions for CBD businesses.
- Add Complete and Accurate Information:
- Business name, address, phone number (NAP).
- Business hours, services, and photos.
- Leverage Features:
- Use attributes like “Delivery” or “In-store shopping.”
- Post regular updates and offers.
Local SEO for Marijuana Dispensaries
Now that you have your Google My Business account set up and running, let’s get into actually optimizing your website – let’s get your website listing on more real estate on Google’s SERP.
To begin – you’re going to want to consider what your customer is searching for. Why did they open Google? How does your business fit in with what they want? Do you want to educate your customer about marijuana (maybe, education is very important!) or do you want them to stop by your marijuana dispensary and make a purchase? Probably the latter.
Enter “keyword research.” I think that HubSpot does a great job at explaining what Keyword Research is. See below:
“Keyword research is the process of finding and analyzing search terms that people enter into search engines with the goal of using that data for a specific purpose, often for search engine optimization (SEO) or general marketing. Keyword research can uncover queries to target, the popularity of these queries, their ranking difficulty, and more.”
So if we’re doing keyword research, we’d find that we really wouldn’t want to rank for ‘dispensary near me’ – that’s far too broad… Imagine if you’re a customer in Florida and you’re seeing results for dispensaries in California? You’d just keep scrolling and would probably be a little confused.
So, as the business owner, that should be good intel for you – you’re going to want to make sure that your website is optimized to rank for your location. If you’re a medical marijuana dispensary in Los Angeles, you might consider targeting “Medical Marijuana Dispensary in Los Angeles” as your primary keyword. When someone in Los Angeles googles “Medical Marijuana Dispensary near me”, Google will pick up their location and will display dispensaries near them – if your site is properly optimized, your website might show up!
Okay great – we understand keyword research and what keyword we want to use…. Now what?
Content is King for your CBD Business or Marijuana Dispensary!
You may have seen this phrase ‘Content is King’ – frankly, as someone who’s been in the SEO industry for a decade, I’m just tired of hearing that phrase. I know I was being dramatic, but it certainly holds true today.
When optimizing your content for search engines, it’s crucial to write as if you are the authority on that content. Google likes to know that you are knowledgeable, but if you can demonstrate experience, expertise, and uniqueness through that writing – you’re golden. So how does this look in practice?
When I’m writing optimized blog content for my website and for my customers, I like to write in first person and demonstrate my expertise in the subject as if I’m speaking to a person directly. So instead of writing “This guide will demonstrate how to rank your website”, and give recycled bullet points on general SEO I write: “Here’s how I ranked my website” and give detailed explanations on what I did.
When you’re considering an SEO agency, make sure they know about your industry!
Keyword Usage
When writing the optimized content, ensure that you’re targeting the keyword(s) you identified during your keyword research phase. When writing a blog post over 1000 words, you might want to consider repeating the keyword 4 or 5 times. I know that we are here to talk about writing your content so search engines see it, but just remember that we need to write our content for humans. Humans are reading it at the end of the day after all!
Some more technical content SEO considerations
When writing the content it’s very important to consider the content hierarchy by leveraging tags such as: Title Tag, H1 tag, and the meta description. Let’s start by talking about what each of these are:
- Title Tag: The title tag of your page is essentially the title of the site. When Google is crawling your website, one of the first things it looks at is the title tag. This is a crucial place to have your identified keyword! Try to keep it to 50 – 60 characters as it’ll get truncated on the SERP!
- H1 Tag: The H1 tag the page’s header. Imagine you’re in school and need to write a research paper – this is exactly that. This tells the user and search engine exactly what they’re about to read about. This should also be 50 – 60 characters long.
- H2, H3, H4…: These are subsequent headers. Important areas where you can break up your content into smaller sections (I do that in this blog) – this could be a good place for secondary or tertiary keywords. You guessed it… 50 – 60 characters long.
- Meta Description: The meta description of each page is a brief explanation of what content is on that page. Google has come out and said that they don’t take meta descriptions into ranking consideration – however, I’ve seen evidence of the contrary… I’ll write a whole other blog post about that. Either way, ensure you have your keyword in the meta description! Google directly says this should be 50 – 150 words.
Build Backlinks
Building backlinks can be a challenging part of running a Search Engine Optimization campaign for your CBD Business or Marijuana Dispensary. Just when you think you have this whole SEO thing down with onsite content and keyword strategy, backlinking is just another beast to tackle.
Backlinks are an extremely important part of your campaign. When selecting an SEO agency, be sure to consider their plan for creating relevant backlinks for your website. Search engines view backlinks as 3rd parties vouching for the validity of your website. On one hand, you might have well written on site content, but Google wants to know how valid that content is – if other high authority, relevant websites are linking to your website, that’s a sign you have valuable content and Google will improve your rankings accordingly.
Some approaches to backlinks for your CBD Business or Marijuana Dispensary.
- Citation building is an easy first start to generate value back to your website.
- Relevant links in the CBD and marijuana industry.
- Local links to cement you as the local authority for your niche.
Technical SEO
I plan on writing an entire article on how to ensure your site is technically compliant, as this can really be in depth and oftentimes require a developer to safely implement into your site.
At a high level, it’s important to ensure that Google and other search engines can actually see your website. See some high level considerations below:
- Set up Google Search Console.
- Ensure your robots.txt allow search engines to see your site.
- Minimize the amount of 404 pages and ensure redirects are set up correctly.
- Make sure your site is blazing fast.
When setting up your CBD business or Marijuana Dispensary, you really want to make sure you’re setting yourself up for success.
If you follow the above tutorial, you will be ranking in no time. This is exactly how I’ve ranked this website and other client’s websites. Contact me to help get your site set up!
How Many Keywords Should I Use For SEO
In this how many keywords should i use for seo post, we will explore the optimal number of keywords to use for SEO purposes. We will discuss the importance of keyword density and how to strike the right balance to maximize your website’s search engine visibility. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced SEO practitioner, this post will provide valuable insights to help you improve your keyword strategy.
SEO Keywords A Quick Introduction

Keywords are crucial for enhancing a website’s visibility and attracting organic traffic. These are the words and phrases that individuals enter into search engines when seeking information, products, or services. Search engines rely on keywords to establish the relevance of websites to a user’s search. Therefore, integrating the appropriate keywords into your website’s content is vital for boosting its visibility and attracting organic traffic.
It is important to identify keywords and phrases that your target audience is likely to use when searching for related content.
How many keywords should i use for SEO In 2024?
It is recommended to use 13 keywords per 100 words of content. Using too many keywords can make the content appear unnatural and spammy to both readers and search engines. Focus on using relevant and specific keywords that accurately reflect the content of the page. Overall, the number of keywords used should be based on the length and focus of the content, with a focus on relevance and natural usage.
How to Use SEO Keywords
Incorporate keywords naturally: Integrate your chosen keywords into your content in a way that feels natural and doesn’t disrupt the flow of the writing. Avoid “keyword stuffing” as it can negatively impact the user experience and SEO.
Start With Keyword Research
Before you start optimizing your website with keywords, it’s important to conduct thorough keyword research. This process involves identifying the terms and phrases that your target audience is likely to use when searching for content related to your website. There are four main types of keywords to consider during your research:
- Short-tail keywords: These are brief, generic terms that are typically one or two words long, such as “gardening” or “SEO.”
- Long-tail keywords: These are longer and more specific phrases, such as “beginner’s guide to gardening” or “how many keywords per page SEO.”
- Primary keywords: The main keywords that are directly related to the main topic or theme of a webpage.
- Secondary keywords: These are related terms and phrases that support the primary keyword and provide additional context.
Primary vs secondary keywords
When optimizing a webpage, it’s important to consider both primary and secondary keywords. While the primary keyword should be the main focus of the page’s content, secondary keywords can be used to provide additional context and relevance. This approach helps search engines understand the comprehensive nature of the content and can improve the page’s visibility for a wider range of search queries.
Should I always target a specific keyword?
While it’s important to have a primary keyword in mind when creating content, it’s also essential to prioritize providing value to your audience. Instead of focusing solely on targeting specific keywords, aim to create high-quality, informative content that addresses the needs and interests of your target audience. This approach can naturally incorporate relevant keywords and improve the overall user experience.
Keyword Density
Keyword density refers to the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a webpage compared to the total word count. While there is no specific optimal keyword density, it’s important to use keywords naturally and avoid overloading your content with them. Keyword stuffing, or the excessive use of keywords, can result in a poor user experience and may lead to search engines penalizing your website.
Which Pages Rank for What?
Different pages on your website may rank for different keywords based on their content and optimization. It’s important to identify the primary and secondary keywords for each page and tailor the content accordingly to improve its visibility for relevant search queries.
Choose Landing Pages
When targeting specific keywords, consider which pages on your website are best suited to serve as landing pages for those keywords. Landing pages should provide comprehensive and relevant information related to the targeted keywords to improve their chances of ranking well on SERPs.
How Many Keywords Should You Track for SEO in 2024?
When it comes to optimizing your website for search engines, one of the key considerations is how many keywords you should use. Finding the right balance is crucial for improving your website’s visibility on search engine results pages (SERPs) without falling into the trap of keyword stuffing, which can have a negative impact on your SEO efforts.
How To Track Keyword Rankings
Choose a keyword tracking tool: There are various tools available such as SEMrush, Ahrefs, Moz, and Google Search Console that can help track keyword rankings. Input your target keywords: Enter the keywords you want to track into the chosen keyword tracking tool. Monitor rankings over time: Regularly check the keyword rankings to see how they fluctuate over time. This can help identify trends and patterns. Analyze the competition: Compare your keyword rankings with those of your competitors to gain insights into your performance and areas for improvement.
Google Search Console
Google Search Console is a valuable tool for tracking keyword rankings and understanding how your website is performing in search results. It provides insights into the keywords that are driving traffic to your website and the pages that are ranking for specific queries.
Is too many keywords bad for SEO?
While it’s important to incorporate relevant keywords into your website’s content, using too many keywords can be detrimental to your SEO efforts. Instead of focusing on quantity, prioritize the quality and relevance of the keywords you use. Aiming for a balance that provides value to your audience while signaling the topic and relevance to search engines is key.
How many keywords should a page target?
While there is no set limit to the number of keywords a page can target, it’s important to prioritize relevance and user experience. Focus on incorporating keywords naturally and providing valuable content that addresses the needs of your audience.
Can I rank without targeting specific keywords?
While targeting specific keywords can improve your website’s visibility, it’s possible to rank for relevant search queries without explicitly targeting them. By creating high-quality, comprehensive content that addresses a wide range of related topics, you can improve your website’s chances of ranking well for various search queries.
Free Tools
There are several free tools available to help you with keyword research and tracking, such as the Ahrefs Content Gap tool, Ahrefs Google Search Console, and AI text generator chat. These tools can provide valuable insights into keyword opportunities, content gaps, and performance tracking to inform your SEO strategy.
In conclusion, finding the right balance of keywords for your website’s content is essential for effective SEO. By conducting thorough keyword research, prioritizing relevance and user experience, and leveraging free tools, you can optimize your website to improve its visibility on search engines and attract organic traffic. Remember, quality and relevance should always take precedence over quantity when it comes to incorporating keywords into your content.

- About Section: Add an About section with a brief introduction to your business or personal background. Use text, images, or videos to tell your story.
- Services Section: Outline the services or products you offer. Use icons, lists, and concise descriptions to make this section easily scannable.
- Portfolio Section: Showcase your best work with a portfolio section. Use a grid layout to display images or videos of your projects, and include short descriptions or case studies.
- Testimonials Section: Add a testimonials section to build trust and credibility. Include quotes from satisfied clients along with their names and photos.
- Contact Section: Create a contact section with a form, your contact information, and a map (if applicable). Ensure the form is simple and user-friendly.
Creating Smooth Scrolling Navigation
Smooth scrolling is a crucial feature of one-page websites, enhancing the user experience by allowing seamless transitions between sections. To enable smooth scrolling:
- Add Anchor Links: In Elementor, add anchor links to each section by using the Menu Anchor widget.
- Create a Custom Menu: Go to Appearance > Menus and create a custom menu with links to each anchor (e.g., #about, #services).
Optimizing Your One-Page Website
SEO Best Practices
Even a one-page website needs to be optimized for search engines. Follow these SEO best practices:
- Title Tags and Meta Descriptions: Write unique title tags and meta descriptions for your website. Make sure they are compelling and include relevant keywords.
- Header Tags: Use header tags (H1, H2, H3) to structure your content and include relevant keywords. Each section should start with a clear, keyword-rich heading.
- Alt Text for Images: Add descriptive alt text to your images to improve accessibility and SEO. Alt text helps search engines understand the content of your images.
- Keyword Optimization: Incorporate relevant keywords naturally throughout your content. Avoid keyword stuffing, and focus on providing value to your readers.
Performance Optimization
Ensure your one-page website loads quickly and performs well:
- Optimize Images: Use image optimization plugins like Smush to compress images without losing quality. Large images can slow down your site, so it’s essential to keep them optimized.
- Enable Caching: Use a caching plugin like W3 Total Cache to improve loading times. Caching reduces the load on your server and speeds up page delivery.
- Minimize Plugins: Limit the number of plugins to avoid slowdowns. Only use essential plugins to keep your site lightweight and fast.
- Lazy Loading: Implement lazy loading for images and videos to improve initial load times. Lazy loading defers the loading of non-critical resources until they are needed.
Enhancing User Engagement
Interactive Elements
Add interactive elements to engage users and keep them on your site longer:
- Sliders and Carousels: Use sliders and carousels to display multiple images or pieces of content in a limited space. These elements can make your site more dynamic and visually appealing.
- Accordions and Tabs: Use accordions and tabs to organize content and improve usability. These elements allow users to reveal or hide content as needed, reducing clutter.
- Animated Elements: Add subtle animations to highlight important elements and guide users through your content. Be mindful not to overdo animations, as too many can be distracting.
Calls to Action
Effective calls to action (CTAs) are essential for guiding users towards your desired actions:
- Button Design: Design attractive buttons with clear and concise text. Use contrasting colors to make your buttons stand out.
- Placement: Place CTAs strategically throughout your page to maximize conversions. Consider placing them at the end of each section or in the header and footer.
- Urgency and Scarcity: Use language that conveys urgency or scarcity to encourage users to take action. Phrases like “Limited Time Offer” or “Sign Up Now” can be effective.
Analyzing and Improving Your Site
Google Analytics
Set up Google Analytics to track user behavior and gather insights into how your site is performing:
- User Flow: Analyze the user flow to understand how visitors navigate your site. Identify any bottlenecks or areas where users drop off.
- Bounce Rate: Monitor your bounce rate to see if users are leaving your site quickly. A high bounce rate can indicate that your content or design needs improvement.
- Conversion Tracking: Set up conversion tracking to measure the effectiveness of your CTAs and overall site performance.
A/B Testing
Conduct A/B testing to compare different versions of your site and determine which performs better:
- Headline Testing: Test different headlines to see which resonates more with your audience.
- CTA Variations: Experiment with different CTA designs, placements, and text to optimize conversions.
- Layout Changes: Test different layouts and section arrangements to find the most effective design.

Designing a Clean and Minimalist WordPress Site
Designing a Clean and Minimalist WordPress Site

Minimalist design focuses on simplicity and functionality, stripping away any elements that are not essential. This approach creates a clean, user-friendly interface that enhances the overall user experience. In this blog post, we will discuss the principles of minimalist design, how to apply them to your WordPress site, and the benefits of adopting this style.
Principles of Minimalist Design
Minimalist design is built on a few core principles that guide the overall aesthetic and functionality of a website. Understanding these principles is key to creating a successful minimalist WordPress site.
- Simplicity: Remove unnecessary elements and focus on what is essential. This principle encourages designers to strip down to the basics, ensuring that every element on the page serves a purpose.
- Whitespace: Use whitespace effectively to create a sense of openness and clarity. Whitespace, or negative space, helps to prevent clutter and makes content more readable.
- Typography: Choose clean, readable fonts and maintain consistency throughout the site. Good typography is crucial in minimalist design as it ensures that the text is easy to read and aesthetically pleasing.
- Color Scheme: Stick to a limited color palette to maintain a cohesive look. Minimalist designs often use neutral colors like white, black, and grey, with occasional splashes of color for emphasis.
- Visual Hierarchy: Use size, contrast, and spacing to guide users’ attention to important elements. A well-defined visual hierarchy helps users navigate the site and find information quickly.
Benefits of a Theme Minimalist WordPress
Adopting a minimalist design approach offers several advantages:
- Improved User Experience: A clean, uncluttered interface makes it easier for users to find what they’re looking for and interact with the site.
- Faster Load Times: Minimalist designs tend to be lighter and faster to load, which can improve your site’s performance and SEO.
- Timeless Appeal: Minimalist designs are less likely to go out of style, ensuring your site remains visually appealing for longer.
- Focus on Content: By removing distractions, minimalist design allows your content to take center stage.
- Ease of Maintenance: With fewer elements to manage, maintaining a minimalist site is generally easier and less time-consuming.
Choosing the Right Theme
Selecting a theme that supports minimalist design is the first step. Look for themes that emphasize simplicity and clean lines. Some popular minimalist themes include:
- Astra
- GeneratePress
- Neve
These themes offer extensive customization options and are optimized for performance, making them ideal for creating a minimalist WordPress site.
Customizing Your Theme
Once you’ve chosen a theme, customize it to fit your minimalist aesthetic:
- Remove Clutter: Eliminate unnecessary widgets, sidebars, and other elements that detract from the clean look. Focus on including only essential features and content.
- Simplify Navigation: Use a simple, straightforward menu with only the most essential links. A clear and concise navigation menu improves usability and enhances the overall user experience.
- Optimize Images: Use high-quality images sparingly and ensure they are optimized for fast loading times. Large, unoptimized images can slow down your site and detract from the minimalist aesthetic.
Typography and Color Scheme
Typography
- Font Selection: Choose simple, sans-serif fonts like Arial, Helvetica, or Open Sans. These fonts are clean, modern, and easy to read.
- Font Size: Ensure text is easily readable by using a font size of at least 16px. Larger font sizes can improve readability, especially on mobile devices.
- Line Spacing: Use generous line spacing to enhance readability. Adequate spacing between lines of text prevents clutter and makes content easier to read.
Color Scheme
- Primary Colors: Choose one or two primary colors and use them consistently throughout the site. A limited color palette creates a cohesive and harmonious design.
- Neutral Backgrounds: Use white or light gray backgrounds to keep the focus on the content. Neutral backgrounds enhance readability and give the site a clean, modern look.
- Accents: Use accent colors sparingly to draw attention to important elements like buttons or calls to action. Accents should complement the primary colors and add visual interest without overwhelming the design.
Content Layout
- Whitespace: Ensure there is ample whitespace around text and images to prevent the layout from feeling cramped. Whitespace gives the design room to breathe and improves readability.
- Grid Layouts: Use grid layouts to organize content systematically, ensuring a clean and balanced appearance. Grids help to align elements and create a structured layout.
- Consistent Styling: Maintain consistent styling for headings, paragraphs, and other elements to create a cohesive look. Consistency in design elements like font sizes, colors, and spacing reinforces the minimalist aesthetic.
Using Minimalist Plugins
Several plugins can help you achieve a minimalist design:
- Elementor: A page builder that allows you to create clean, custom layouts without coding. Elementor offers a drag-and-drop interface and a wide range of widgets to enhance your design.
- WPForms: A simple, user-friendly form builder that integrates well with minimalist designs. WPForms allows you to create contact forms, surveys, and other forms with ease.
- Smush: An image optimization plugin that helps maintain fast loading times without compromising image quality. Smush compresses images automatically, ensuring your site remains lightweight and fast.

- Review Your Current Hosting Environment: Understand the specifications and configurations of your current hosting environment. Take note of the PHP version, database details, and any custom configurations that may need to be replicated on WP Engine.
- Audit Your Website: Conduct a thorough audit of your website to identify any potential issues that could impact the migration. Check for broken links, outdated plugins, and any other issues that need to be addressed before migrating.
- Gather Credentials: Ensure you have all necessary credentials for both your current hosting provider and WP Engine. This includes FTP/SFTP access, database login details, and admin access to your WordPress dashboard.

Backup Your Website
Before starting the migration, it’s crucial to create a complete backup of your website. This ensures that you have a fallback option in case anything goes wrong during the migration process.
- Manual Backup
- Files Backup: Use an FTP client (such as FileZilla) to download all your website files from the current host. Connect to your server, navigate to the root directory of your WordPress installation, and download all files and folders
- Database Backup: Access your hosting control panel (such as cPanel) and use phpMyAdmin to export your database. Select your WordPress database, click on “Export,” choose the “Quick” method, and download the SQL file.
